Why is pornography bad?
For some there may be a dispute about whether pornography addiction exists and if in fact pornography viewing is harmful at all!
Here are some observations to consider as you make your personal decision.
1) Increases Aggression
There is a correlation between exposure to some pornography and subsequent behavioral aggression. The strongest correlation exists between depictions of violent sexual activity and aggression.
2) Increases Acceptance Of Rape Myths
Acceptance of rape myths has been a common consequence of viewing some pornography. In part, this is because violent pornography often promotes and eroticizes rape as a sexual act that is enjoyed and/or desired by females – when in fact it is not.
3) Can Be Addictive
Everyone that views pornography does not become addicted. Most professionals believe pornography addiction occurs when an individual engages in the overuse of pornography to the extent that they experience negative consequences and their ability to stop decreases.
4) Changes The Nature Of The Brain
Going along with the addictive nature of pornography is the changes that occur in the brain with ongoing viewing. See FAQ on Voices For Virtue
5) Affects Family Members And Others
Although pornography is commonly consumed by one household member in a solitary, secret fashion, the impact of sexually explicit material is being felt by entire family systems, not to mention whole communities and corporate circles. The marital relationship, is easily affected by sexual pursuits in pornography outside of marriage.
6) Is Bad Because God Says So
Everyone that intentional views pornography violates God’s commandments. The spirit will leave you when you break this commandment. A Prophet of God Thomas S. Monson, has said pornography is a deadly carrier.
Dallin H. Oaks reminds us that the brain won’t vomit back filth (see also Ensign, May 2005).
These are only a few reasons why pornography is bad, there are others. Here are some additional resources:
