Strengthening Ourselves in Virtuous Living

Where do my sexual thoughts come from?

Origins of “Thoughts and Feelings”

1) Memory of earlier images or behavior

For example, while bored and watching tv a previously viewed sexual image comes into your mind.

2) Triggers in the environment around you

For example, while at Gold’s Gym you’re working out and out of nowhere this very immodestly dressed person walks by. You look and a sexual thought results.

3) A temptation from Satan

For example, while preparing to speak in church you’re searching for a particular scripture and out of the blue you have an awful sexual thought. You wonder “Where did that come from?” Evil temptations come from Satan and can be specific to you. Joseph Fielding Smith taught:

We should be on guard always to resist Satan’s advances. …He has power to place thoughts in our minds and to whisper to us in unspoken impressions to entice us to satisfy our appetites or desires and in various other ways he plays upon our weaknesses and desires (Answers to Gospel Questions, 3:81)

Satan’s purpose, his goal, is to cause you to sin.

4) Healthy Sexuality: A result of your divine identity

For example, you’re 18 and at a church dance. Your attracted to this really good looking, modestly dressed person of the opposite sex. You have this strong urge to go dance with them. You do. After the dance you ask them out on a date tomorrow night.
